3.1.1.1. Before the Dribble
(1) Q: In 1v1, how do we accomplish creating space or getting past our defender before the dribble in 1v1?
A: In this situation before the dribble, we are preparing for two major actions: shooting (which ideally involves creating space for the uncontested shot), and dribbling (which ideally involves getting past our defender to get closer to the hoop for the eventual uncontested shot). Since it is 1v1 we are not concerned with passing to another teammate at the moment. To prepare for these two major actions with the ball on the perimeter, you will usually want to:
face up and get into triple threat position
use a series of step-throughs, rip-throughs, and deceptions
We will go through these two phases in the next sections.
