2.1.2.5. Post Deny Defense
(1) Q: How do we accomplish deny defense in the post?
A: There are several ways to deny a post player the ball, however we will focus first on ¾ front post defense.
(2) Q: What is ¾ front post defense?
A: In ¾ front post defense, the defender will have about 3/4ths of their body in front of the post player (between the post player and the ball), and about ¼ behind the post player (towards the hoop). This allows prevention of a post-entry pass, but also allows the defender to quickly get 100% behind the post player if the post player ends up catching the ball (at which point the defense would transition into on-ball post defense).
Skills Drills
Skills Drill #1: ¾ Front Post Defense
A coach or other player (C) will have the ball on the wing. Offense Player 1 (O1) will post up on the block. Defense Player 1 (X1) will ¾ front O1. C will attempt to pass the ball to O1, and X1 must deflect the pass. If O1 catches the ball, X1 must go into on-ball defense.
Switch as necessary.
