2.1.1.4. On-Ball Combined Skills Drills
SKILLS DRILLS
Skills Drill #1: 1v1 Controlled Competition - Defense Positioning (focus on defense’s body, position, movement, contesting)
Rules:
Players: 1 offensive player versus 1 defensive player (Offensive player is not trying to score)
Starting Position: On the wing one step outside of the 3-point line. Use both sides of the court (right and left side).
Switching: Offense to Defense, Defense to end of the other line.
Speed:
Speed 1: slow
Speed 2: medium
Speed 3: fast
Progression (for each progression, go through each speed phase before proceeding to the next progression):
Progression 1: offense dribbles to baseline
Progression 2: offense tries to go to middle, defense cuts off; offense switches directions and continues to dribble to baseline
Progression 3: offense tries to go to middle, defense cuts off; offense switches directions and continues to dribble to baseline, stops and picks up ball; defense yells “dead” and mirrors pass
Progression 4: offense tries to go to middle, defense cuts off; offense continues to dribble to baseline and shoots; defense contests shot (no rebound yet, we will add later)
Skills Drill #2: 1v1 Live Competition - Defensive Points
Rules:
Players: 1 offensive player versus 1 defensive player (Offensive player is trying to score);
Game Play: offense gets 1 shot and 4 dribbles
Scoring: points are scored by defense if good defense is played and offense doesn’t score
Starting Position: On the wing one step outside of the 3-point line. Use both sides of the court (right and left side)
Switching: If offense wins (scores, or bad defense), Offense switches to Defense. If Defense wins (no score and good defense), they stay on Defense and earn points. Losers go to the end of the line.
Examples of good defense:
1: Defense doesn’t allow Offense to go to the middle into the key
2: Defense is within arms-length of offense when shooting
3: Defense is contesting the shot (hands up)
4: Defense is between shooter and the basket
Points (only scored by Defense):
+1 if offense misses and good defense (examples above)
First to 5 points wins
Losers have consequence (e.g. push-ups, sprints)
